The 1Strategy founder is a former AWS Enterprise Solutions Architect who helped Amazon’s largest enterprise customers design, build, deploy and move workloads to AWS. The 1Strategy team has been deploying workloads on AWS since 2007. 1Strategy provides services based on five tenets: Core AWS services, application development and transformation (DevOps), security, cost optimization and Big Data. Today, they hold an Advanced Partner status with AWS, is a Launch Partner to the AWS Managed Service Partner program, Partner to the AWS Public Sector Program and are in process to obtain the DevOps competency.

Toyota is a Japanese automotive manufacturer headquartered in Toyota, Aichi, Japan. In March 2014 the multinational corporation consisted of 338,875 employees world-wide and, as of February 2016, was the 13th-largest company in the world by revenue. Toyota was the largest automobile manufacturer in 2012 (by production) ahead of the Volkswagen Group and General Motors. In July of that year, the company reported the production of its 200-millionth vehicle. Toyota is the world’s first automobile manufacturer to produce more than 10 million vehicles per year. It did so in 2012 according to OICA, and in 2013 according to company data. As of July 2014, Toyota was the largest listed company in Japan by market capitalization (worth more than twice as much as #2-ranked SoftBank) and by revenue. Toyota is the world’s market leader in sales of hybrid electric vehicles, and one of the largest companies to encourage the mass-market adoption of hybrid vehicles across the globe. Cumulative global sales of Toyota and Lexus hybrid passenger car models passed the 9 million milestone in April 2016. Its Prius family is the world’s top selling hybrid nameplate with almost 5.7 million units sold worldwide as of 30th of April 2016.

Customer Challenge/Solution

Web Apps are core marketing websites for the automobile manufacturer that have to be highly available and scale with the end user traffic. These are complex applications due to the following core requirements: the content of the website is region based and there are about 30 regions, the content for each region is maintained by distinct marketing teams and they need the ability to manage and publish the content in a secure, timely and storage constraint-free manner. The content needs to be stored on highly scalable, available, durable and secure infrastructure. This is a hybrid cloud solution where the applications need to securely integrate with core backend on premise services as well as services that have been migrated to the cloud. Cost reduction is one benefit of the migration, so the application and the database need to scale up or down as needed without requiring capital investment. Flexibility is another key benefit of the migration, to be able to support the varying requirements from a large user base. Since these are core services, application and database have to be highly available along with disaster recovery solutions need to meet the enterprise requirements and security has to be part of every layer.

1Strategy is responsible for migration of the key core end user web applications for this critical site and many of its supporting services to AWS. This is part of 1Strategy’s services offering where they help the customer through the cloud adoption phase, architecture support and leading the migration effort and managed services. On successful launch of these services, the next goal of the team is to “Nurture” these services as well as implement a scalable migration framework to migrate the rest of the core Toyota services. 1Strategy has helped the customer to embrace DevOps and some of the core principles are already in practice through Continuous Integration and deployment, infrastructure as code, version control via Source code management systems and continuous monitoring & logging.
